I would like to start off by saying I was so thrilled to be a part of this special ceremony for Eve and Phuc. This was my first traditional Vietnamese Tea Ceremony and it was so lovely to be a part of. The day is all about mutual respect between children and their parents (and ancestors), as the couple gives thanks and appreciation for raising them. Ultimately, it symbolises the joining of the two families. I was able to capture some really special moments I’m sure they’ll cherish for years.
The day began with the males gathering at Phuc’s family home. This is where family and close friends helped him get ready. He wore a stunning royal blue traditional gown, called Áo dài, with a matching circular hat. I could tell he was ready for the day ahead and so excited. The family then stood and prayed together, which was lovely to see.
Following this, it was time to collect the many spectacular gifts that were to be brought to the ceremony. Everyone lined up and carried different items, including flowers, the suckling pig, traditional treats, fruit and plenty of others. I could tell already that a splendid day was about to take place, full of food, love and celebration.
I then headed to meet the ladies and was amazed at how fabulous Eve looked. Her hair and makeup was already done for the day ahead and it was time for her to get into her gown. She wore a traditional red Áo dài, along with a khăn đóng headdress. We were all blown away by her beauty. Friends and family were all dressed in bright colours and traditional gowns. Eve and Phuc’s adorable little daughter, Mia, was dressed in gorgeous yellow.
About forty guests arrived and patiently waited for the ceremony to begin. It started with candles and incense being lit, symbolising the joining of their families. From here a family member took the lead and invited the guest to gather around for the tea ceremony. Each guest was presented with tea, after which they graciously presented a gift or envelope to the happy couple in return. Once this concluded, Eve and Phuc exchanged beautiful rings.
A wonderful feast followed, which looked and smelled incredible. Gifts presented by Phuc’s family were enjoyed by all, as well an abundance of traditional food. It was lovely for everyone to celebrate the joining of these families the day before the wedding. It also allowed me to get to know family and friends better before seeing them again the following day. We got some wonderful images of the couple, the family and the guests in the courtyard.
I just want to thank Eve and Phuc for inviting me to be a part of their special day. It was lovely to be able to capture these moments and I hope you enjoy looking back on them fondly for years to come. It was truly such a beautiful day and I’m so happy for you and your families.
Until we meet again,
M xxx
